The Love That Transforms

Receiving and Reflecting the Love of Christ

1 John 4:9–10 — “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Opening Reflection

At the center of Advent stands the love of God—steadfast, sacrificial, and transformative. The Father’s gift of His Son is the ultimate expression of His heart toward us (John 3:16). Advent invites us to slow down long enough to receive this love afresh and to let it reshape how we see God, how we see ourselves, and how we love those around us.

Taking a Devotional View

God’s love is not passive or distant. It moved Him to step into our world through the birth of Jesus (Romans 5:8). This love pursued us even when we were wandering, rescued us when we were helpless, and adopted us when we were far from Him (Ephesians 1:4–5). Advent reminds us that God’s love always moves toward us—not because of our goodness, but because of His grace.

The love of Christ is also transforming. When we truly encounter His love, we cannot remain the same. His Spirit pours God’s love into our hearts (Romans 5:5), teaching us to extend forgiveness, kindness, and compassion to others. As we abide in Christ, His love begins to shape our responses, our relationships, and even our desires (John 15:12). The more we receive His love, the more freely we can give it.

Advent love also looks forward with longing. We love because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:19), and we look ahead with joy to the day when His love will be fully realized in His eternal kingdom. Until that day, Advent calls us to reflect His love with sincerity and grace. Let His love transform the way you speak, act, give, and care. Emmanuel has come—and His love changes everything.
