Why Are You Afraid?

Trusting Christ in the Midst of Life’s Storms
Part 3 of 10 Series — Christ's Notable Questions

Matthew 8:26 — “And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?’ Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.”

Opening Reflection

Fear is a deeply human response. Storms arise unexpectedly, circumstances feel overwhelming, and our hearts quickly drift toward anxiety and uncertainty. In the midst of a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, the disciples panicked even though Jesus Himself was in the boat with them. As waves crashed around them and fear gripped their hearts, Jesus asked a searching question: “Why are you afraid?”

That question still reaches believers today. Fear often exposes where faith is weak and where trust in Christ has not yet fully matured. Though we know His promises and speak of His faithfulness, difficult circumstances can quickly reveal how easily our peace depends upon outward stability rather than upon the presence of the Savior Himself.

Taking a Devotional View

The disciples were experienced fishermen who understood storms, yet this storm overwhelmed them. Fear caused them to focus more on the danger around them than on the Lord beside them. Jesus’ presence should have steadied their hearts, but panic overtook faith. How often we respond the same way. We know Christ is with us, yet we allow circumstances, uncertainty, finances, health concerns, relational struggles, or fears about the future to dictate our peace. Jesus did not deny the reality of the storm. The wind was fierce, the waves were real, and the danger was genuine. Faith is not pretending difficulties do not exist. Rather, faith clings to Christ in the midst of them. Scripture reminds us that God’s presence is our refuge and strength even when the earth gives way (Psalm 46:1–3).

When Jesus asked, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26), He exposed the connection between fear and unbelief. Fear grows strongest when we lose sight of who Christ is. The disciples saw the size of the storm but temporarily forgot the greatness of the One who commands creation itself. The same struggle often unfolds within us. Fear magnifies circumstances while faith magnifies Christ. Jesus then rose and rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm. The One who slept in the boat was also the sovereign Lord over nature. His authority extended not only over the storm outside the disciples but over the turmoil within them. Christ still brings peace to troubled hearts today. Sometimes He calms the storm itself. Other times He calms His people while the storm continues. In both cases, His presence remains sufficient (Isaiah 41:10).

Trusting Christ in life’s storms means bringing our fears honestly before Him rather than hiding them. It means rehearsing His promises instead of feeding anxiety, remembering His faithfulness in past trials, and choosing to believe that He will not abandon us now. Scripture calls us to cast all our anxieties upon Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). The calm Christ provides is deeper than favorable circumstances. It is the settled assurance that we belong to Him and are secure in His hands. Fear may still knock at the door of the heart, but faith answers by looking to Jesus. His question, “Why are you afraid?” is not spoken to shame us but to draw us into deeper trust, steadier confidence, and greater rest in Him.
