What Do You Want Me to Do for You?
Bringing Our Desires Honestly to Jesus
Part 4 of 10 Series — Christ's Notable Questions
Mark 10:51 — “And Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ And the blind man said to him, ‘Rabbi, let me recover my sight.’”
Opening Reflection
Jesus’ question to blind Bartimaeus may seem obvious at first glance. Surely the Lord already knew what the man needed. Yet Christ still asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” The question reaches beyond information and into relationship. God invites His people to bring their desires honestly before Him, not because He is unaware, but because prayer becomes an expression of trust, dependence, faith, and surrender.
Many believers struggle to voice the true longings of their hearts. Some fear disappointment. Others feel ashamed of their weakness or uncertain whether God truly cares. Yet Jesus stopped in the midst of a crowd to listen to one desperate man cry out for mercy. That same Savior still welcomes His people to come boldly before Him with honesty and faith.
Taking a Devotional View
Bartimaeus did not respond with vague or hesitant words. He spoke plainly and boldly: “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” His request was specific, personal, and filled with confidence in Christ’s power. Though blind and marginalized, he believed Jesus could do what no one else could, and faith moved him to cry out persistently despite opposition from the crowd (Mark 10:48). Jesus’ response revealed both compassion and authority. He did not ignore Bartimaeus or dismiss his request as insignificant. Instead, Christ listened, responded, and restored him. This reminds us that prayer is not merely a religious exercise or ritualistic language. It is the invitation to bring the real cries, burdens, hopes, and desires of our hearts before the Lord who listens and answers according to His wisdom. Scripture repeatedly encourages believers to ask, seek, and knock with persistence and confidence in the Father’s goodness (Matthew 7:7–11; James 4:2).
Yet Christ’s question also exposes the deeper motivations of the heart. What we ask of Jesus often reveals what we value most. Do we seek comfort more than holiness, relief more than transformation, or success more than surrender? Prayer not only expresses desire; it reveals desire. The Lord lovingly uses prayer to refine our hearts and align our longings with His purposes. Bartimaeus desired physical sight, but the encounter also led him into discipleship. After receiving his sight, he followed Jesus on the way (Mark 10:52). Christ’s answers are never merely about improving circumstances; they are meant to draw us nearer to Him.
True discipleship learns to pray with both honesty and surrender. Faith boldly presents requests before God while humbly trusting His wisdom above our own understanding. Jesus Himself modeled this in Gethsemane when He prayed, “Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Sometimes God grants exactly what we ask. Other times He answers differently, shaping us through waiting, redirection, or refinement. In every case, His ultimate desire is to conform us more fully to Christlikeness (Romans 8:29). Christ still asks His people, “What do you want me to do for you?” He welcomes honesty, dependence, and persistent faith, and as we bring our desires before Him, He faithfully shapes our hearts so that we increasingly desire not only His blessings, but His presence, His will, and His transforming work within us.
