Why Do You Doubt?

Fixing Our Eyes on Christ in Moments of Uncertainty
Part 8 of 10 Series — Christ's Notable Questions

Matthew 14:31 — “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’”

Opening Reflection

When Peter stepped out of the boat, he was doing something impossible apart from Christ. His eyes were fixed on Jesus, and for a moment he walked across the water by faith. But when he saw the wind, fear rose within him, and he began to sink. In that moment of weakness, Jesus immediately reached out His hand, took hold of him, and asked, “Why did you doubt?”

This question echoes into our own moments of uncertainty. Doubt often rises when our attention shifts from the Savior to the storm. We may begin with trust, step forward in faith, and then become overwhelmed by what we see, feel, or cannot control. Yet the same Christ who called Peter onto the water was also near enough to rescue him when he began to sink.

Taking a Devotional View

Peter’s experience reminds us that faith can be real and still need strengthening. He had enough faith to step out of the boat, but when the wind drew his attention away from Jesus, fear gained influence over his heart (Matthew 14:29–30). This is often how doubt works. It does not always begin with open unbelief. Sometimes it begins when circumstances start to look larger, louder, and more convincing than the promises and presence of Christ. Doubt thrives when visible trouble outweighs spiritual truth. Peter was not imagining the storm; the waves were real. Yet the greater reality was that Jesus stood before him. Faith does not deny difficulty. Faith chooses which reality will govern the heart. The storm may be strong, but Christ is stronger. The uncertainty may feel overwhelming, but His presence remains sufficient.

Jesus did not abandon Peter when his faith faltered. Matthew tells us that Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him (Matthew 14:31). That single word, “immediately,” is filled with mercy. Christ did not wait for Peter to sink farther before responding. He met him in weakness, rescued him in fear, and corrected him while holding him. The question “Why did you doubt?” was not meant to destroy Peter but to reveal what had happened within him. Doubt had entered when Peter’s focus shifted. The issue was not the lack of Christ’s power, presence, or willingness to save, but Peter’s divided attention. The same danger remains for us. When we focus more on what threatens us than on the One who sustains us, fear begins to weaken our confidence and reshape our thoughts.

This question calls believers to examine where trust is truly resting. Are we measuring the future by our limited understanding or by Christ’s faithfulness? Scripture calls us to look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). The direction of our gaze matters because the heart often follows what the eyes continually behold. Doubt may come, but it does not have to define us. When our faith weakens, we can cry out as Peter did, “Lord, save me” (Matthew 14:30). Christ does not despise that prayer. He lifts sinking disciples, steadies trembling hearts, and teaches us again to trust Him. Fixing our eyes on Christ does not remove every storm, but it teaches us to walk by faith in the presence of the One who rules over them.

Ask Yourself

  • Where in my life do I struggle with doubt today?
  • Am I more focused on my circumstances than on Christ?
  • What visible “wind and waves” are currently shaping my thoughts and emotions?
  • How can I fix my eyes more fully on Jesus in moments of fear?
  • What promise of Christ do I need to trust more deeply right now?

Lord Jesus, thank You for reaching out when I falter in faith. Forgive me for the times I let fear overshadow Your promises. Lift me when I sink, steady me when I stumble, and fix my eyes on You. Strengthen my trust so that doubt gives way to deeper faith, and teach me to walk with confidence in Your presence even when the storm continues. Amen.
