What Are You Seeking?
Examining the Desires that Drive Us
Part 9 of 10 Series — Christ's Notable Questions
John 1:38 — “Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, ‘What are you seeking?’ And they said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’”
Opening Reflection
The first recorded words of Jesus in John’s Gospel are not a command, a miracle, or a sermon, but a question: “What are you seeking?” It is a question that reaches beyond surface behavior and into the deepest motivations of the heart. Every life is shaped by desires, pursuits, and longings. We move toward what we treasure, prioritize what we crave, and organize our lives around what we believe will satisfy us.
Jesus’ question was first spoken to disciples who had begun following Him, yet it remains a question for every believer today. What am I truly seeking? Comfort? Security? Success? Recognition? Control? Relief? Or am I ultimately seeking Christ Himself? The answer to that question shapes the direction of our lives and reveals the condition of our hearts.
Taking a Devotional View
When Jesus asked, “What are you seeking?” the disciples answered, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” Their response revealed more than curiosity. They wanted to be with Him. They were not merely seeking information about Jesus; they were seeking relationship with Him. This is where true discipleship begins. Christ is not simply a means to an end, nor merely a provider of blessings, wisdom, help, or answers. He Himself is the treasure. Many people seek Jesus primarily for what He can give rather than for who He is. Some seek relief from difficulty, peace, purpose, healing, or security. While Christ compassionately cares for human needs, He continually calls people deeper than temporary blessings. The greatest gift Christ gives is not merely provision from His hand but His presence with His people.
This is why Jesus taught His disciples to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). What we seek most deeply will shape every other priority in life. When earthly pursuits become ultimate, the soul remains restless and unsatisfied. But when Christ becomes our chief pursuit, other desires begin to find their proper place beneath His lordship. Jesus’ question also invites honest self-examination. Our schedules, thoughts, conversations, spending, ambitions, and prayers often reveal what we are truly seeking. We may profess devotion to Christ while quietly pursuing approval, comfort, achievement, entertainment, control, or worldly success above Him. The heart naturally drifts toward lesser treasures unless it is continually drawn back to the sufficiency of Christ.
Scripture calls believers to “seek the things that are above, where Christ is” and to “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:1–2). This does not mean abandoning earthly responsibilities, but it does mean living with heavenly priorities. Seeking Christ transforms the way we approach every area of life. Relationships, work, ministry, possessions, and goals all become secondary to knowing and following Him. The more clearly we see the beauty and worth of Christ, the less satisfying lesser pursuits become. Jesus still asks, “What are you seeking?” It is a question about affection and desire — about what truly governs the heart. The disciple who continually seeks Christ Himself discovers that He alone satisfies the deepest longings of the soul and gives lasting meaning to every part of life.
