Could You Not Watch with Me One Hour?
The Call to Watchfulness and Prayer
Part 10 of 10 Series — Christ's Notable Questions
Matthew 26:40 — “And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, ‘So, could you not watch with me one hour?’”
Opening Reflection
In the shadow of Gethsemane, as Jesus prepared to face the agony of the cross, He asked His disciples to remain near Him and keep watch. Yet when He returned, He found them sleeping. In that solemn moment, Jesus asked Peter, “Could you not watch with me one hour?” The question carries both sadness and invitation. It reveals the weakness of the disciples, but it also reveals Christ’s desire for their nearness, attentiveness, and perseverance in prayer.
This question still speaks to believers today. We live in a world filled with distraction, spiritual dullness, and competing demands upon the heart. Prayer is often neglected not because we reject God outright, but because weariness, busyness, comfort, and distraction slowly weaken spiritual attentiveness. Yet Jesus continues to call His followers into watchfulness, dependence, and communion with Him.
Taking a Devotional View
Gethsemane reveals that prayer is part of the battleground of discipleship. Jesus knew what lay ahead for His disciples — temptation, fear, confusion, and failure. That is why He urged them, “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Their sleeping was not merely physical exhaustion; it exposed spiritual weakness and unpreparedness. The same struggle remains within believers today. We often intend to pray, desire closeness with God, and recognize our need for spiritual strength, yet distractions and spiritual lethargy quietly pull us away. Jesus’ question lovingly confronts that drift and calls us to remain spiritually awake and attentive to the presence of God.
To “watch” with Christ means more than simply staying physically awake. It means living with spiritual alertness, remaining attentive to temptation, aware of spiritual realities, and dependent upon God rather than self-sufficiency. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to vigilance, perseverance, and prayerful dependence because spiritual battles are real and the heart is easily distracted. Prayer is not merely preparation for ministry or difficult seasons; prayer itself is part of abiding with Christ. In Gethsemane, Jesus invited His disciples into fellowship with Him during one of the most sorrowful moments of His earthly ministry. He desired their nearness. Prayer draws believers near to the heart of Christ and deepens intimacy with Him. As Colossians 4:2 teaches, disciples are to “continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”
Jesus also reminds us that neglecting prayer leaves us vulnerable. Peter would soon deny Christ three times, and the disciples would scatter in fear. Their lack of watchfulness contributed to spiritual weakness when testing came. Prayer does not remove all difficulty, but it strengthens the soul to stand firm within it. Watching with Christ requires sacrifice, perseverance, and intentional attentiveness over distraction and dependence over self-reliance. Yet Jesus’ question is not merely corrective; it is deeply relational. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” reminds us that prayer is about remaining near the Savior. The disciple who keeps company with Christ in prayer finds strengthened faith, deeper fellowship, and grace to stand faithfully in every season.
