Called to Be Witnesses
Empowered by the Spirit for God’s Mission
Acts 1:8 (ESV) — “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Opening Reflection
As Jesus prepared to ascend into heaven, He gave His disciples one final commission: to be His witnesses through the power of the Holy Spirit. These were not casual parting words but a defining mission that would shape their lives and the future of the church. To witness is more than speaking; it is living in such a way that Christ is seen in us, wherever He places us. The call to be a witness is personal, continual, and Spirit-empowered.
Taking a Devotional View
Jesus made it clear that we cannot fulfill this mission in our own strength. The Spirit’s power equips us with courage, wisdom, and boldness to speak and live the gospel. Fear and hesitation may be natural, but God’s Spirit transforms weakness into proclamation, just as He did with Peter at Pentecost. Every believer is called to rely not on self but on the Spirit who empowers us for this holy calling.
The command to begin in “Jerusalem” reminds us that witnessing starts close to home. It begins in our families, workplaces, and communities before extending outward. As disciples move from their immediate circles into broader contexts, God's mission expands—crossing cultures, barriers, and borders. We carry Christ’s light from where we are to wherever He sends us.
Ultimately, to be a witness is to tell His story through our lives. We do not testify about our greatness but about Christ crucified and risen. The world does not need perfect Christians but faithful ones—those who let the Spirit shape their character and their words. To witness is to be available so that Christ’s life is displayed in us daily.
Key Thoughts & Takeaways
Key Thoughts
- The Holy Spirit empowers our witness. We cannot testify faithfully in our own strength; God provides the courage and power needed for this calling.
- Witnessing begins where God has placed us. Our “Jerusalem” represents our everyday surroundings—family, neighbors, workplaces, and communities—where Christ is first seen through our lives.
- Our witness points people to Christ, not ourselves. The focus of our testimony is the saving work of Jesus Christ—His death and resurrection—proclaimed through both our words and our lives.
Ask Yourself
- Am I relying on the Spirit’s power or my own strength when sharing my faith?
- Where is my personal “Jerusalem,” and how am I living as a witness there?
- Do my words and actions consistently point others to Christ rather than to myself?
Lord Jesus, thank You for entrusting me with the call to be Your witness. Forgive me for the times I have been silent or relied on my own strength. Fill me afresh with Your Spirit, giving me courage, clarity, and compassion to testify of You in my daily life. May my words and actions point others to You, and may I be faithful in both my “Jerusalem” and beyond. In Your name, Amen.
