Divine Affection — No Condemnation
Loved before corrected, invited before commanded
Mark 10:21 — “And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him…”
Opening Reflection
Before Jesus ever speaks a hard truth, He looks with love. That gaze changes everything. Correction delivered without affection crushes the heart, but correction flowing from love restores it. In Christ, we are not addressed as projects to be fixed but as people deeply cherished. His love removes the fear of condemnation and invites us into joyful surrender rather than reluctant compliance.
Taking a Devotional View
When Jesus looked at the rich young ruler, Scripture makes a point to tell us He loved him. The command that followed was not born of irritation but affection. Divine love always precedes divine direction. This means God’s call to let go of lesser treasures is not punishment but invitation into greater life.
Condemnation drives us away from God; affection draws us near. Romans 8:1 assures us that in Christ there is no condemnation. When we know we are loved, we can face truth honestly. We no longer hide in shame but respond in trust, believing His commands flow from a heart that seeks our good.
Surrender, then, becomes an act of joy. We release what competes with Christ not because we must earn His love but because we already have it. Generosity, obedience, and devotion become responses to grace, not attempts to secure approval.

Lord Jesus, thank You for looking at me with love before You ever correct me. Let Your affection silence condemnation in my heart. Show me the “one thing” that competes with You, and give me grace to release it with joy. Make my life a generous yes to Your invitation, that I might treasure You above all and follow You freely. Amen.
