Even a Cup of Cold Water Matters

There Are No Insignificant Acts of Faithfulness

Matthew 10:42 — “And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

Opening Reflection

Our world tends to measure significance by visibility and recognition. We often assume that only the largest acts of service truly matter. Yet Jesus offers a very different perspective. As He sent His disciples out to represent Him, He explained that even the smallest act of kindness shown to someone because they belong to Him carries eternal value.

In fact, Jesus points to the simplest gesture imaginable—offering a cup of cold water—and assures His listeners that such an act will not go unnoticed by God. What may seem small to us is never insignificant in Christ’s kingdom.

Taking a Devotional View

In Matthew 10:40–42, Jesus describes several ways people participate in God’s work. Some are sent to proclaim His message, while others receive and support those who serve. Still others strengthen fellow believers through acts of encouragement and care. But the most remarkable truth appears when Jesus points to something as small as a cup of cold water and promises that even this act will not lose its reward.

God’s kingdom operates by a different standard than the world’s system of recognition. The Lord sees what others overlook. When a believer shows kindness, encouragement, hospitality, or practical help because someone belongs to Christ, that act becomes part of God’s work in the world.

May my daily life become a channel through which Your care reaches those around me. Amen.
