A Different Way of Thinking
Having the Mind of Christ — Devotion 4 of 10
Romans 12:2 — “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Opening Reflection
Having traced the mind Christ displayed in humility and service, we turn now to the transformation of our own thinking. Paul tells us plainly that Christian maturity does not happen automatically. God has given believers a new life in Christ, yet our patterns of thought must continually be brought into harmony with that new life through the renewal of the mind.
The world is constantly pressing us into its mold - its assumptions about success, its measures of worth, its instincts toward self-protection and self-promotion. Paul does not tell us to merely resist this pressure through willpower. He tells us to be transformed, which is an entirely different kind of change than gritted-teeth resistance.
This is where the mind of Christ becomes practical. We do not manufacture Christlike thinking by determination alone. The Spirit reshapes the patterns by which we see, value, and choose, and that renewal has a clear purpose: so that we can discern what is good, acceptable, and perfect in God’s will.
Taking a Devotional View
The word Paul uses for “transformed” is metamorphoo - the same root behind our word metamorphosis. It describes a change from the inside out, not a change of behavior layered over an unchanged heart. Conformity is imposed from outside; transformation grows from within.
This renewal is ongoing, indicated by the present tense of the Greek verb. It happens through Scripture, prayer, the Spirit’s work, and the steady practice of bringing our thoughts under God’s truth rather than the world’s patterns. Later in this series Paul will say, “we have the mind of Christ.” There is no contradiction: the mind of Christ is ours by the Spirit, while our everyday thinking is progressively renewed so that we increasingly live according to what we have already been given.
