Having the Mind of Christ — Devotion 5 of 10

Romans 8:5-6 — “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”

Opening Reflection

Paul draws a stark line here between two ways of being oriented - two settings of the mind that produce two entirely different outcomes. This is not primarily about isolated thoughts that pass through the mind, but about the whole direction the mind is set toward, the default it returns to again and again.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh - self-gratification, self-protection, self-advancement. Those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit. The difference is not occasional but habitual, and Paul says the consequences could not be more different: death on one hand, life and peace on the other.

This is a sober but hopeful word. It means the mind of Christ is not simply a matter of good intentions in the moment - it is a settled orientation, formed over time, that determines the whole shape of a life.

Taking a Devotional View

The Greek word behind “set their minds” (phroneo) is the same root Paul uses in Philippians 2:5, “Have this mind among yourselves.” It is not simply thinking about something once, but adopting a settled disposition toward it - the mental home a person keeps returning to.

Paul’s contrast reaches deeper than a few good or bad thoughts. He describes the characteristic direction of life under the flesh and life under the Spirit. For believers, that contrast also becomes a searching question: which direction is shaping the way I am thinking and living today? Life and peace are not prizes for flawless performance; they belong to the Spirit-directed life God is producing in His people.
