A Mind You Already Have
Having the Mind of Christ — Devotion 7 of 10
1 Corinthians 2:16 — “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
Opening Reflection
After tracing Christ’s humility and the renewal of our thinking, we arrive at a statement that changes how we understand everything that has come before it. Paul is not merely describing a distant goal toward which believers strain. He states a present reality: “we have the mind of Christ.”
The question that leads into this statement is almost rhetorical in its impossibility - who has understood the mind of the Lord well enough to instruct Him? No one, of course. And yet Paul’s answer is not that we remain shut out from God’s thoughts. Through the Spirit, believers have been given access to what no unaided human mind could reach on its own.
This gives believers no basis for intellectual pride. Paul’s point is that the Spirit who searches the depths of God has been given to those who belong to Christ. Through the Spirit, God has graciously made His wisdom known to us and enabled us to evaluate life from a Christ-centered perspective that unaided human wisdom could never produce.
Taking a Devotional View
The context of this verse matters. Paul has just spent the chapter contrasting the wisdom of this world with the wisdom of God, revealed through the Spirit. Verse 16 is the capstone of that argument: the Spirit who reveals God’s wisdom to us is the same Spirit who gives us, in some real sense, the mind of Christ Himself.
This truth carries weight in both directions. Believers are not left with natural reasoning alone; through the Spirit we have genuine access to God’s revealed wisdom. At the same time, possession does not mean instant maturity. Romans 12 still calls our minds to continual renewal. We have the mind of Christ as a Spirit-given reality, and we spend a lifetime learning to bring our habits, reactions, values, and decisions into increasing agreement with that gift.

Spirit of God, thank You that I am not left to my own wisdom. You have given me the mind of Christ. Renew my everyday thinking so that my habits, reactions, values, and decisions increasingly reflect what You have already made mine in Him. Teach me to trust Your wisdom over my own. In Jesus’ name, amen.
