In Christ I Am Seated in the Heavenlies

Living from His victory, not for it
Part 10 of 17 Series — What being “in Christ” personally means to you

Ephesians 2:6 — “And raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Opening Reflection

Many believers experience spiritual life as a constant scramble for footing — fears that loom larger than they should, temptations that feel undefeated, discouragement that drains strength before the day even begins. The instinct is to fight from below, hoping to gain victory if effort holds out long enough. Scripture refuses that frame: in Christ, the believer is not still climbing toward victory but already seated with Him in the heavenly places.

Taking a Devotional View

Ephesians 2:6 sits inside Paul’s astonishing description of what God has done for those once “dead in trespasses and sins.” God did not merely forgive them; He raised them with Christ and seated them with Him in the heavenly places. The seating is significant. In the previous chapter, Paul described Christ being seated at God’s right hand, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion” (Ephesians 1:20-22). Believers do not occupy that position alongside Christ as equals; they share it because they are in Him. His enthronement is the believer’s positional reality.

This reframes the spiritual life. The believer does not fight for victory but from victory. The decisive battle was won at the cross and the empty tomb, where Christ “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Colossians 2:15). Romans 8:37 names the believer as “more than conquerors through him who loved us,” and 1 Corinthians 15:57 places the verdict squarely: God “gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Spiritual battles still come — temptation, discouragement, accusation — but they are met from a seated position rather than a desperate one. The posture changes: gratitude rather than panic, confidence rather than scramble, prayer that proceeds from authority rather than gropes for it.

Key Thoughts & Takeaways

Key Thoughts

  • In Christ, believers have been raised and seated with Him in the heavenly places, sharing the position He holds far above every rule and authority (Ephesians 2:6; Ephesians 1:20-22).
  • The decisive victory has already been won at the cross; spiritual battles are now fought from triumph rather than toward it (Colossians 2:15; Romans 8:37).
  • This elevated position reshapes prayer and daily life with confidence and gratitude rather than panic and scramble (1 Corinthians 15:57; 2 Corinthians 2:14).

Ask Yourself

  • Where am I still fighting from below as if victory were uncertain rather than already secured in Christ?
  • Which battle in my life would change posture if I prayed from a seated position with Christ rather than a desperate one?
  • How can I act today in a way that matches the authority I share with Christ rather than the panic I sometimes feel?

Heavenly Father, thank You that in Christ I have been raised and seated with Him in the heavenly places. Forgive the panic that fights as if the outcome were still in doubt when Your Son has already triumphed. Lift my eyes above today’s circumstances, teach me to pray and act from the position You have given me in Him, and let gratitude replace scramble in every battle I face. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
