Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord?
Trusting God’s power when circumstances say otherwise
Genesis 18:14 — “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Opening Reflection
When Sarah overheard the Lord’s promise, her response was laughter—an honest expression of how impossible the situation appeared (Genesis 18:12). Time, age, and experience all argued against what God declared. Yet the Lord answered her doubt with a question that still reaches our hearts today: “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” (Genesis 18:14). This single question exposes the tension between human limitation and divine power.
Taking a Devotional View
Faith does not ignore reality; it entrusts reality to God. Abraham and Sarah had waited for years, and the delay had worn down their expectations. Still, God was neither late nor uncertain. What appeared to be delay was simply His appointed time unfolding (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The Lord’s promise was never weakened by their waiting.
Scripture consistently affirms this truth. Jesus later echoed the same assurance when He declared, “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (Luke 18:27). The angel Gabriel spoke similarly to Mary: “For nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). The Lord’s power is not measured by circumstances, age, or strength, but by His unchanging nature. His promises rest on who He is, not on what we see (Numbers 23:19).
When God asks, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” He invites us to place our impossible situations into His capable hands. Waiting seasons often become places where faith is refined and hope is reborn (Isaiah 40:31). What once produced quiet disbelief can, in time, become a testimony of joyful trust—just as Abraham grew “fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20–21).
Key Thoughts & Takeaways
Key Thoughts
- God’s power is never limited by human weakness or circumstance (Jeremiah 32:17).
- What feels delayed is often God’s purposeful timing at work (Habakkuk 2:3).
- Every promise God makes rests securely on His faithfulness (Hebrews 10:23).
- Impossibility is often the setting God chooses to display His glory (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Ask Yourself
- Where am I struggling to trust God with what seems impossible?
- How do I respond when God’s timing differs from my expectations?
- What situation do I need to place fully in God’s hands today?
Lord, remind me that nothing is too hard for You. Help me trust Your power when my understanding falls short and to rest in Your timing when waiting feels difficult. Strengthen my faith so my life reflects confidence in who You are and what You have promised. Amen.
