A Light You Didn’t Light Yourself

Matthew 5:16 — “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Opening Reflection
This command comes straight out of the Sermon on the Mount, immediately after the Beatitudes and two striking declarations: “You are the salt of the earth... you are the light of the world” (vv.13-14). Identity is stated before instruction is given.
“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” The command to “let” it shine assumes the light already exists. Jesus does not say “become light.” He says “you are light... now let it shine.”
The stated goal is not admiration of the disciple, but glory to the Father. The light was never meant to terminate on the one holding it.
Taking a Devotional View
A city on a hill (v.14) and a lamp on a stand (v.15) make the same point: light is not naturally hidden. Hiding it takes deliberate effort - a basket placed over it on purpose. “Let” here means removing an obstruction, not generating illumination from nothing.
Good works are the visible form the light takes - not abstract holiness, but concrete, observable deeds that lead others not to the disciple’s credit, but to the Father’s glory.

Father, You’ve already called me light; I don’t need to manufacture what You’ve given. Remove whatever I’ve used to cover it - fear, comfort, pride - and let it shine so plainly that others see You, not me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
