Every Promise Finds Its Yes
Christ, the Guarantee of God’s Word — Devotion 2 of 12
2 Corinthians 1:20 — “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
Opening Reflection
When Paul changed his travel plans, some in Corinth accused him of being unreliable, a man who said “Yes” and “No” in the same breath. Rather than simply defending himself, Paul lifted their eyes to something far greater than his own dependability. He pointed them to the faithfulness of God and to the Son of God, in whom there is no wavering at all. Before we can lean on any particular promise in Scripture, we need to know where all of God’s promises meet, and Paul tells us plainly: they meet in Jesus.
Taking a Devotional View
Every promise God ever made, to Abraham, to David, through the prophets, converges on one Person. Jesus is not simply one more promise in a long list; He is the fulfillment and the guarantee of God’s redemptive purposes. In His birth, His sinless life, His death for our sins, and His resurrection, God demonstrated His unwavering faithfulness to everything He had promised. While not every promise recorded in Scripture was made directly to us, every promise reveals something about the faithfulness of the God we trust. In Christ, we can confidently embrace every promise God has given to those who belong to Him. We have been “blessed . . . with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3), and God has even “put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:22). Every promise we lean on in this series comes to us through Him and is secured by Him.
Paul goes on: “That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” Amen means “so be it” or “it is true.” God speaks His Yes in Christ, and we are invited to answer with our Amen, not only with our lips but with our choices and the attitude of our hearts. When fear causes us to question God’s faithfulness, we answer with the truth of His Word. When a decision tests whether we really trust Him, we choose according to what He has revealed, confident that He will faithfully accomplish everything He has promised. And as we rest on a God who keeps His word, we become people whose own word can be trusted (Matthew 5:37). A life that says Amen to God’s promises becomes a quiet testimony to others that He is faithful.
