Strength for the Weary

Renewed Strength for Those Who Wait — Devotion 5 of 12

Isaiah 40:29–31 — “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Opening Reflection

Weariness is not only a matter of tired muscles. There is a weariness of heart that settles in when burdens drag on and answers seem slow in coming. God’s people in Isaiah’s day knew that kind of weariness. They were saying, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God” (Isaiah 40:27). God’s answer to them was not a lecture, but a reminder of who He is and a promise of what He gives.

Taking a Devotional View

“The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary” (Isaiah 40:28). The One who never runs low is the One who “gives power to the faint.” Isaiah reminds us that even the strongest human strength runs out, for “even youths shall faint and be weary.” But those who “wait for the LORD” will find their strength renewed. To wait for the Lord is not to sit idle; it is to look to Him in expectant trust, to stop relying on our own reserves and draw on His. Notice the progression: mounting up like eagles, running without weariness, walking without fainting. Sometimes the greatest evidence of God’s strength is simply the grace to keep walking faithfully through an ordinary, difficult day. God’s promise of renewed strength does not mean that every illness will be healed, every burden removed, or every difficulty resolved. Sometimes He changes our circumstances; other times He strengthens us to remain faithful while we walk through them. His promise is not that we will never grow weary, but that we can continue depending upon Him when our own strength is insufficient. Paul learned this same truth when the Lord told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Leaning on this promise begins with honesty. We must admit our weakness rather than pretend we are fine, and bring it to God in prayer. Waiting upon the Lord is an active expression of faith, not passive resignation. We seek Him in prayer, listen to His Word, rest when He calls us to rest, obey what He has revealed, and trust His timing. Rather than demanding that God work according to our expectations, we depend upon Him to provide the strength needed for each day. And the strength He gives is never meant for us alone. As He renews us, we are able to “strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees” (Isaiah 35:3) of those around us, and to “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). The weary believer who has been renewed by God becomes a source of encouragement to others who are running low.

Ask Yourself

  • Where am I trying to run on my own reserves instead of waiting on the Lord?
  • What would it look like for me to honestly bring my weakness to God today?
  • Who around me is weary, and how might I help strengthen them?

Everlasting God, You never faint or grow weary, and You give power to the faint. I confess that I often try to push through in my own strength until I have nothing left. Teach me to wait on You, to bring You my weakness honestly, and to take each step in the strength You supply. Renew me so that I may run and not be weary, walk and not faint, and help me to strengthen others who are tired along the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
