Not in Vain

Why We Keep Going — Devotion 8 of 12

1 Corinthians 15:58 — “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

Opening Reflection

Much of the work done for Christ happens out of sight. A parent prays over a child who seems uninterested in God. A Sunday school teacher prepares lessons week after week for a handful of children. A caregiver serves quietly, unnoticed and unthanked. In seasons like these, it is easy to wonder whether any of it matters. Paul closes his great chapter on the resurrection with a promise written for exactly that question.

Taking a Devotional View

The verse begins with “Therefore,” and that word ties it to everything Paul has just said. Christ has been raised from the dead, death has been swallowed up in victory, and “thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). Because the resurrection is real, what is done in Christ carries on into eternity. Our labor is “not in vain” because it is done “in the Lord,” in union with Him and for His sake. Results may be hidden from us for now, but nothing offered to Him in faith is lost. “God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints” (Hebrews 6:10).

This promise gives us a reason to keep going that does not depend on visible results. Paul calls us to be “steadfast,” firmly settled; “immovable,” not shaken by discouragement; and “always abounding,” continuing to give ourselves fully to the Lord’s work. That is a choice we make again and again. It also calls us to examine our motives, so that we serve heartily, “as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23), rather than for applause. And because many around us are laboring faithfully without recognition, we can be the ones who encourage them, reminding them that the Lord sees and that their work in Him will last.

Key Thoughts & Takeaways

Key Thoughts

  • Because Christ is risen, God gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).
  • Labor done in the Lord is never in vain, even when results are unseen (1 Corinthians 15:58).
  • God does not overlook the work and love His people show in serving others (Hebrews 6:10).
  • We serve heartily as for the Lord, knowing that He will reward us (Colossians 3:23–24).
  • We are called not to grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap (Galatians 6:9).

Ask Yourself

  • Where have I grown discouraged because I cannot see the results of my service?
  • Am I serving for the Lord’s approval or for the recognition of others?
  • Who is laboring faithfully without notice, and how can I encourage them this week?

Risen Lord, thank You that because You live, nothing done in You is wasted. Forgive me for the times I have grown discouraged and measured my service by what I could see. Make me steadfast and immovable, always abounding in Your work, and purify my motives so that I serve You and not the approval of others. Help me to encourage those who are laboring quietly, reminding them that You see and that their work in You will last. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
