Love That Moves Your Feet

Following the One Who Calls You

John 14:15 — “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Opening Reflection

Love is often reduced to a feeling. We say we love a place, a meal, or a moment. We even speak of loving people while our actions tell a different story. In a world where love is frequently defined by emotion or preference, Jesus gives us a deeper and more meaningful picture. His words invite us to see love not merely as affection, but as a response that shapes how we live.

When Jesus speaks about love, He connects it to something steady and visible. He points beyond words and beyond warm feelings to a heart that listens and a life that responds. His definition of love draws us into a relationship where trust and surrender replace mere sentiment.

Taking a Devotional View

When Jesus says, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments,” He is not placing a burden on our shoulders or demanding perfection. He is describing what naturally happens when a heart has truly been captured by Him. Love for Christ is not proven by intensity of emotion or frequency of verbal devotion. It is revealed in a willingness to follow where He leads.

It is possible to admire Jesus, to appreciate His kindness, and to feel gratitude for His sacrifice while still holding tightly to control of our own lives. But love that has been deeply touched by Him recognizes that He is not only Savior, but Lord. His authority is not harsh; it is trustworthy. His commands are not restrictions meant to diminish us; they are guidance meant to lead us into life. Obedience becomes the language of trust, the quiet way we say, “I believe Your way is better than mine.”

This kind of love listens. It pays attention to His words. It allows His truth to shape decisions, attitudes, and priorities. And it responds. It chooses forgiveness when bitterness seems easier. It chooses integrity when compromise is convenient. It chooses faithfulness when drifting would be simpler. Each step of obedience becomes an expression of love, not because we are trying to earn His favor, but because our hearts have been won over by who He is.

Jesus is not asking for flawless performance; He is inviting surrendered direction. A heart captured by His love does not argue for independence. It leans into trust. It does not merely celebrate what He has done; it responds to who He is. Love for Jesus is more than emotion and more than words. It is a life that listens and answers with willing obedience. Love for Jesus does not sit still; it moves our feet in the direction of His will.

Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me first and drawing my heart to Yourself. Teach me to love You not only with feelings or words, but with a life that listens and responds. Amen.
