Moving Toward a More Vibrant Faith

Moving Toward A More Vibrant Faith Series — Devotion 1 of 8

John 15:5 — “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Opening Reflection

A vibrant faith is not necessarily a faith filled with constant excitement, dramatic experiences, or freedom from struggle. It is a faith that is alive—growing in dependence upon Christ, responsive to the Holy Spirit, increasingly shaped by God’s truth, and resilient when circumstances become difficult. Jesus gives us the source of such a life in a simple command: “abide.” A branch does not manufacture life for itself. It bears fruit because it remains connected to the vine. In the same way, the vitality of our faith comes from our continuing relationship with Christ.

Taking a Devotional View

Even sincere believers can drift. Our hope can become attached to circumstances. Our love for Christ can cool into routine. Our service can become striving. Our thinking can gradually conform to the world around us. We can begin directing our own lives while asking God merely to bless our decisions. None of this necessarily means we have abandoned Christ. Often it means that something within us needs to be recentered upon Him. Spiritual vibrancy diminishes whenever something other than Christ begins occupying the place that belongs to Christ.

Moving toward a more vibrant faith, therefore, is not primarily about adding more religious activity. It is about continually bringing our hearts, hopes, thoughts, desires, decisions, and actions back into alignment with Jesus. Throughout this series, we will examine several areas where spiritual drift can occur and ask God to draw us nearer to Himself. We are not pursuing spiritual achievement. We are pursuing Christ, trusting that as we abide in Him, His life will increasingly become visible in ours.

Key Thoughts & Takeaways

Key Thoughts

  • A vibrant faith is living, growing, Christ-centered, Spirit-responsive, and resilient.
  • Spiritual vitality comes from abiding in Christ, not from trying to manufacture spiritual life on our own (John 15:4–5).
  • Even faithful believers can drift when hope, love, thinking, or decisions become centered somewhere other than Christ.
  • Moving toward vibrant faith is a process of continual spiritual realignment.
  • The goal of the series is not spiritual achievement but deeper dependence upon Jesus.

Ask Yourself

  • Has any part of my relationship with Christ become routine or spiritually dry?
  • What currently has the greatest influence over my hope, emotions, and decisions?
  • Am I trying to produce spiritual fruit through effort rather than dependence upon Christ?
  • Where might God be calling me to recenter my life upon Jesus?
  • What would deeper abiding in Christ look like for me today?

Lord Jesus, You are the source of every part of my spiritual life. Keep me from mistaking religious activity for a living relationship with You. Show me where my heart has drifted, where my hope has become misplaced, and where I have begun depending upon myself. Draw me nearer to You. Teach me to abide in You so that Your life, Your character, and Your fruit become increasingly visible in me. Amen.
