Walking With the Spirit

Moving Toward A More Vibrant Faith Series — Devotion 6 of 8

Galatians 5:16 — “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Opening Reflection

The Christian life was never intended to be lived through determination alone. Yet it is possible to begin with dependence upon God and gradually return to managing life primarily through our own wisdom, ability, and strength. We make our plans, pursue our preferences, respond according to our instincts, and then ask God to bless what we have decided. Paul describes another way: “walk by the Spirit.” Walking suggests an ongoing, everyday relationship—not an occasional encounter with God when we face something beyond our ability.

Taking a Devotional View

Walking with the Spirit means cultivating sensitivity to God’s presence and direction. We bring our decisions before Him. We allow Scripture to challenge our impulses. We respond when He exposes attitudes that do not reflect Christ. We depend upon His strength when obedience exceeds our natural ability. The Spirit does not merely help us accomplish the life we have chosen; He increasingly forms within us the life God desires. His fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—becomes visible as we yield ourselves to His work (Galatians 5:22–23).

A vibrant faith is therefore not measured merely by how much we accomplish for God but by how willingly we allow God to work within us. The important question is not simply, “Am I asking God for help?” but “Am I allowing God’s Spirit to lead?” The more readily we follow Him, the more clearly the character of Christ can emerge through our lives.

Key Thoughts & Takeaways

Key Thoughts

  • The Christian life cannot be sustained by determination and self-reliance alone.
  • To “walk by the Spirit” describes an ongoing pattern of dependence and responsiveness.
  • Spirit-directed living brings our plans, impulses, attitudes, and decisions under God’s direction.
  • The Holy Spirit forms the character of Christ within us through His fruit (Galatians 5:22–23).
  • Vibrant faith is demonstrated not only by activity for God but by yieldedness to God.

Ask Yourself

  • Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to direct my life, or mainly asking Him to bless plans I have already made?
  • Do I bring everyday decisions before God or only the difficult ones?
  • How readily do I respond when the Spirit exposes an attitude that does not reflect Christ?
  • Where am I currently relying most heavily upon my own strength?
  • Which aspect of the fruit of the Spirit most needs to become more visible in me?

Holy Spirit, teach me to walk with You. Keep me from living independently and only seeking Your help when I reach the limits of my own strength. Direct my thoughts, decisions, attitudes, and responses. Make me sensitive to Your correction and willing to follow Your leading. Produce the character of Christ within me so that my life increasingly reflects Him. Amen.
