Remembering to Let Go
God is Never Overwhelmed by Our Circumstances
Psalm 61:1–2 — “Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Opening Reflection
Overwhelming seasons often make our world feel smaller, tighter, and dimmer. Pressures mount, responsibilities multiply, and our hearts grow heavy as we try to hold everything together. This is the moment when A. W. Tozer’s observation rings true: “Sometimes when we get overwhelmed we forget how big God is.” Our problem is not that God has diminished, but that our focus has narrowed. We unintentionally magnify the weight of our circumstances and minimize the greatness of our God.
Taking a Devotional View
Psalm 61:1–2 gives language to the weary heart: “When my heart is faint… lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” David does not attempt to climb to higher ground on his own strength—he asks to be led. Letting go, then, is not passive resignation; it is active trust. It is the humble admission that we cannot lift ourselves but that God can. To let go is to loosen our grip on fear, control, and anxious striving, and instead place our full weight on the One who stands firm when everything else shakes.
Peter experienced this truth on the water. As long as his eyes remained on Jesus, he walked securely. But when he focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. Jesus had not changed—Peter’s attention had. The same is often true for us. We cling tightly to what scares us, hoping our grip will steady the storm. Yet Christ invites us instead to release our fears into His hands. Letting go is not losing control; it is giving control to the Only One who truly has it.
Each time anxiety rises or circumstances overwhelm, we may whisper, “Lord, help me let go. Help me remember how big You are.” This simple prayer reorients the heart. It reminds us that the God who hears our faintest cry is also the Rock who never moves. You may be overwhelmed—but your God never is. And as you let go, you discover the peace that comes from resting in His steady, unfailing strength.
