Live to Honor Him

Opening Reflection

Love does not compartmentalize. It colors every part of a life, even the parts that seem entirely mundane. Paul's instruction here leaves nothing outside its reach: "whatever you do, in word or deed." Not most things. Whatever.

Living to honor Jesus is not reserved for obviously spiritual activities like church attendance or prayer. Paul extends it to ordinary work, everyday conversation, the small unremarkable tasks that fill most of an actual day. Love for Christ is meant to fill all of it, not just the parts that look religious.

Taking a Devotional View

To do something "in the name of the Lord Jesus" means acting as His representative - under His authority, for His glory, even in the most everyday task. Paul says something similar just a few verses later: "whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" (Colossians 3:23). The workplace, the household, the ordinary errand - all of it becomes an arena for honoring Christ.

Notice the posture Paul attaches to this: "giving thanks." Honoring Christ in ordinary life is meant to flow from gratitude, not from pressure to perform well enough to earn His approval. When done this way, the ordinary quietly becomes worship - not because the task changes, but because the heart behind it does.

Lord Jesus, thank You that no part of my life is too small or too ordinary to honor You. Teach me to do whatever I do - my work, my words, my ordinary tasks - in Your name and for Your glory, with a heart full of gratitude rather than performance. In Jesus' name, amen.
