The Joy of Obedience
Finding Fullness of Joy in Walking With Christ
John 15:10–11 — “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
Opening Reflection
Obedience can sound like a word of restriction—rules to follow, desires to surrender, and duties to perform. Yet Jesus speaks of obedience in an entirely different atmosphere. He places it within the warmth of His love and connects it directly to the fullness of His joy. The obedience Jesus desires is not the reluctant compliance of someone trying to earn His acceptance. It is the willing response of someone who knows that Christ is trustworthy and that His ways are good.
Taking a Devotional View
Jesus said, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love” (John 15:10). He was not teaching that obedience causes Him to begin loving us. His love precedes our obedience and makes our obedience possible. To abide in His love is to remain in the place where His love shapes our desires, directs our decisions, and becomes the controlling influence of our lives. Jesus Himself modeled this relationship through His loving obedience to the Father. When we obey Him, we are following the pattern of trust and love that we first see perfectly displayed in Christ.
This does not mean every act of obedience will feel pleasant. Sometimes obedience requires sacrifice, confession, forgiveness, patience, or the surrender of something we deeply want. The joy may not be found in the immediate difficulty but in knowing that we have trusted Jesus and chosen what pleases Him. Scripture says that God’s precepts are right, “rejoicing the heart” (Psalm 19:8), and that the one who acts upon His Word “will be blessed in his doing” (James 1:25). Sin promises a quick pleasure that eventually diminishes joy. Obedience may carry an immediate cost, but it keeps us close to Christ, frees us from the sorrow of resisting Him, and opens our hearts to receive the joy He gives.
Key Thoughts & Takeaways
Key Thoughts
- Obedience does not earn Christ’s love; it is our loving response to the love He has already shown us (John 15:10).
- Jesus connects keeping His commands, abiding in His love, and experiencing the fullness of His joy (John 15:10–11).
- Joyful obedience grows from trusting that God’s commands are wise, right, and good (Psalm 19:8).
- The deepest joy of obedience is knowing that we are walking closely with Christ and choosing what pleases Him.
Ask Yourself
- Do I primarily view obedience as a burden, or as a loving response to Christ?
- Is there an area in which I am resisting something Jesus has clearly asked of me?
- Am I trusting that Christ’s commands are intended for my good, even when obedience is costly?
- What step of obedience can I take today as an expression of my love for Jesus?
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me before I could ever obey You. Forgive me for the times I have viewed Your commands as burdens rather than as the wise direction of the One who loves me. Teach me to trust You enough to obey, even when obedience is costly. Keep me abiding in Your love, and let Your joy become full in me as I walk closely with You. Amen.
