Hidden Motives, Costly Devotion
The Week That Changed Everything – Day 4
Matthew 26:13 — “Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Opening Reflection
As the week unfolded, the contrast between true devotion and hidden motives became unmistakable. In a quiet setting in Bethany, a woman approached Jesus with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment. Without hesitation, she poured it on His head—an act of costly and unreserved devotion.
What others saw as waste, Jesus recognized as worship. What seemed excessive to some was, in reality, an expression of deep understanding. She saw His worth clearly—and responded accordingly.
In the same unfolding moment, another response emerged. Judas, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests and agreed to betray Jesus. One act was marked by sacrificial devotion; the other by calculated self-interest.
Two individuals, both near to Jesus—yet moving in completely opposite directions.
Taking a Devotional View
These two responses reveal a defining truth: proximity to Jesus does not guarantee devotion to Him. Both the woman and Judas were close to Him, yet their hearts revealed entirely different values.
The woman gave what was costly because she rightly valued who Jesus was. Her devotion was not measured, calculated, or restrained—it was wholehearted. She held nothing back because she understood that He was worthy of everything.
Judas, by contrast, placed a price on Jesus. He exchanged the presence of Christ for temporary gain. His decision did not happen in a moment—it revealed a heart that had already begun to drift.
This contrast is not merely historical—it is diagnostic. It reveals that our response to Jesus is always shaped by what we value most. What we treasure will determine whether we surrender or withhold, worship or negotiate.
Devotion is not defined by what is convenient, but by what we are willing to give. It is not expressed in proximity, but in priority. The question is not whether we are near to Jesus, but whether He is truly first in our lives.
As truth has been revealed throughout this week, a response becomes unavoidable. Hearts are not neutral—they move either toward surrender or toward self-interest. What remains hidden will eventually be revealed in what we choose.

Ask Yourself
- What does my life reveal about how I truly value Jesus?
- Am I offering Him my best, or only what is convenient?
- Is there anything I am unwilling to surrender to Him?
- Am I moving toward deeper devotion—or subtle self-interest?
Lord, help me to see Your worth clearly and respond with wholehearted devotion. Reveal any hidden motives in my heart that compete with my love for You. Guard me from drifting into self-interest, and teach me to surrender fully and willingly. May my life reflect a devotion that honors You above all else. Amen.
